Put A Snake In Office

With the local elections a few days away, my neighborhood is covered in election signs.

Saturday, the 11-year old girl who lives across the street decided to join in the fun. She and a friend created "Re-Elect Harry Potter" and "Elect Hermione Granger" signs, which they placed next to the road on our street.

Of course, as soon as I saw the signs I knew what I had to do. Last night, I stuck over there and added my own sign.

Update: We had a downpour Monday night, which, curiously, destroyed my sign while leaving the Harry and Hermione signs unharmed. Curse that meddling Dumbledore! Potter:1, Malfoy:0.

I was bummed my sign didn't make it to the election, so I decided to make another. The Draco placard had been up for two days and everyone driving down the street had seen it, so I figured that joke was over. Thus:

Love it! Imagine the possibilities, though, if you put your creative energies into good instead of evil!

Heh. I like. Reminds me of this:

That's awesome!

I hope Draco doesn't win. That campaign is obviously just a stepping stone to the Governor's seat.

Posted by: Rob Cockerham on October 6, 2003 10:19 AM

Nice going -- you probably made those children cry.

Posted by: the kiosk on October 6, 2003 10:51 AM

yours is way better than the 11-year-old girl's. nice job showing them up!!

Posted by: livie on October 6, 2003 11:24 AM

so, you're gonna be a father soon, huh?

huh.

Accio Harry Potter fandom!

Posted by: Chris M. Dickson on October 6, 2003 2:12 PM

You look just like your pre-school picture. Except with your mouth closed. Annnnd, the hair thing. And the striped shirt. And you didn't need a shave in preschool. Otherwise, JUST THE SAME

Posted by: Suzyn on October 6, 2003 2:24 PM

If I was that little girl, and I'd put up those signs, I would be thrilled to hysterics that someone jumped in on the game. Especially with a slick poster like that one.
Instead of pouting, I'd make sure the next campaign's posters were that much slicker, is all.
Geesh, lowercase initialled people. No wonder there's so much mediocrity in politics, these days.

Posted by: Jessica on October 6, 2003 6:00 PM

what does "instead of evil" mean?

Posted by: Dr. Twist on October 6, 2003 6:06 PM

Be careful not to let Ahnold see those signs. He may get pissed off and, like, grope, photograph and nibble them or something.

Posted by: jennifer on October 6, 2003 7:09 PM

*giggles hysterically* While I'm a Gryffindor at heart, I must admit you're sign was way better. Way to join in the game! Viva la Harry Potter!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on October 6, 2003 7:30 PM

Those signs took them all afternoon?! I'm sure they're very sweet kids, but man, they wouldn't last a week in my sweat shop.

Posted by: Hildago on October 6, 2003 8:02 PM

Incidentally, is there any deliberate symbolism behind you having put Draco Malfoy on a cross? Ooh, that'll get the fundies hot under the collar...

Posted by: still Chris Dickson on October 6, 2003 8:37 PM

Coolest thing ever.

Posted by: Tom on October 7, 2003 2:59 AM

I think it's important in these grave times to elect someone who understands the nature of evil.

Posted by: Dean esmay on October 7, 2003 5:56 AM

That's pure brilliance. VOTE DRACO!! Damn I wish I was there to join in on the fun. Maybe during the next local election...

Posted by: Allison on October 7, 2003 5:57 AM

New campaign slogan:

"Why settle for the lesser of two evils? VOTE DRACO!"

Posted by: George on October 7, 2003 6:01 AM

OMG that is Sooo funny!!!!!!! After watching all of this compaign craziness - this is a great relieve.

VOte Draco everybody ^^

Posted by: Tatyana on October 7, 2003 6:28 AM

I don't know you, but you must be really cool to make those signs.

I run a Draco Malfoy website, and I was wondering if we could link to this page from our site. Though... fair warning... you might be worshipped by a few people who think you're as cool as I do.

Sir, I represent the Committee to Re-Elect Bush the Younger and we are willing to file suit unless you cease and desist using our future campaign slogan.

you have one hour to get your sign off my yard...

Posted by: . on October 7, 2003 9:38 AM

Looks like the Potter sign is drawn directly on the sign, while yours is a stapled printout. Paper is weak!

You should go put those signs along Privit drive. >:)

Posted by: Elfir on October 7, 2003 9:48 AM

Fantastic! I'm laughing my head off, inspite of my very bad cold. *cough*

Anyway, your signs were awesome. I'm gonna take a page from your book and do the same come next year's pres. election.

good job. vote voldemort!

Posted by: lindsey on October 7, 2003 10:15 AM

YESSSSSS!!! Vote Draco!!!!!!! VOTE DRACO!!!! (not Weasley...) There's a lack of sexy blond Slytherins to rule over everybody...

Posted by: Amiastine on October 7, 2003 11:41 AM

Weasley is our King! Weasley is our King! HE never lets the quaffle (aka dumbasses who know nothing about running a government) in, Weasley is our King!
I'm from California, can you tell?

Posted by: Anonymous on October 7, 2003 12:03 PM

Found you via the Leaky Cauldron site (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/). I wish there was a battle of signs here on my street. Neat ones, like yours and your neighbors. *L* The only sign I've seen so far is "Join Arnold." HP is such more cooler. :-D

Posted by: Jen the Fangirl on October 7, 2003 1:03 PM

Way to turn those kids off politics at an early age, Matthew. That's what this nation needs, you know: less voters.

Posted by: KOTWF on October 7, 2003 1:26 PM

Move over Bush.

Posted by: Jodi on October 7, 2003 2:14 PM

That is so great! Yes I vote for RON! Go Wealsey!

Posted by: Jessica on October 7, 2003 2:35 PM

Re-Open Nominations? Man, don't you guys have enough to choose from already?

Posted by: Anonymous on October 7, 2003 2:39 PM

lol!! CLASSIC! I would have voted for Draco - if he's good enough to Snape, then he's good enough for me :D

Posted by: Vanyaria on October 7, 2003 3:57 PM

That is so funny! I can't believe the sourpusses who have actually criticized you for "showing up" the girls when it was obviously just good fun! I agree with the poster who said the girls were probably thrilled to see that someone "got it" and joined in! I know mine would have been! And every good Gryffindor rises to a challenge, though it was very Slytherin of them to - um - relocate the sign under cover of darkness!! Very cool indeed! =)

Posted by: Beth on October 7, 2003 4:09 PM

Vote for Draco, can't be any worse than Bush. ;-)

Posted by: Anonymous on October 7, 2003 4:23 PM

Holy crikey, where do you live??? I'm right down the street from you!! I'm off of [address removed] those signs have made me laugh every morning this week! On my way home today I think I saw the mother with her two girls taking a photo in front of those signs - I was wondering what had happened to the Draco one, that was funny! So is the weasley is our king poster. Great going, thank you so much! Email me if you're in the neighborhood.

Posted by: Anne-Marie on October 7, 2003 5:51 PM

Posted by: Victor I. on October 7, 2003 6:36 PM

Posted by: Anna de Logardiere on October 8, 2003 4:56 AM

Posted by: Magdalene on October 8, 2003 5:40 AM

You are awesome!!! I love your signs and your creativity. I would definitely vote for either Draco or Ron--they can't do any worse than the present crop of politicians seeking office. They may even be a definite improvement.

Incidentally, you've given me an idea! There will be an election in my home city soon. I think I'll make up some signs like yours. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

In fact, why don't you make addditional similar signs and offer them for sale. I'm sure you would do a thriving business.

Posted by: Red Siren on October 8, 2003 4:49 PM

LOL!!! That's great! :^D
Very creative, and I'm sure it gave any Potter fan passing by a grin that lasted the day!

Posted by: Gengi on October 8, 2003 11:09 PM

I love it!!! What a great way to spice up election time. When my friends and I get together next week, we'll see if we can't make some of these signs!! If we do, I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks!!!

Posted by: Amy on October 9, 2003 4:07 PM

wow the closest we get to that in my community is the occasional "Robin Rape" sign...
You so absolutley rule.

Posted by: Flying Gerbil King on October 9, 2003 6:54 PM

"I think it's important in these grave times to elect someone who understands the nature of evil."

Posted by: mara on October 13, 2003 4:28 AM

That has made my day! :) I agree with all the (good) comments made so far!

As for this comment:
Way to turn those kids off politics at an early age, Matthew. That's what this nation needs, you know: less voters.

The kids started it...they showed the interest in creating signs to support someone they thought worthy of office (whether real or ficitonal) and I'm sure the fact that someone else showed interest in it made it more fun for them...they probably told their friends, etc. Sounds to me like it could help to get them interested in politics!

Posted by: Tiffany on October 13, 2003 1:41 PM

That's awsome. Ron is DEFINETLY smarter than any of those nit-wits that ran; even if he does have the emotional range of a teaspoon!

Posted by: Danielle on October 13, 2003 7:00 PM

Lol! I was thinking Luna for President, but yeah...brilliant! Love the posters, someone should put them up around here!

VOTE LOVEGOOD...AIN'T NOTHING WRONG WITH A LITTLE INSANITY!
